Magazine Enterprise Recognizes Standouts in Dying Industy

www.jossip.com - 26th Sep 2008

Eliot Spitzer: The Magazine Publishers of America will announce the winners of the their 2008 Cover Awards this Monday, which is sort of bittersweet news for an industry which is going down the shitter at an alarming rate. Well hey, it's like Michael Scott said in last night's weight-loss episode of The Office, "I don't care what any stupid scale says, you guys are all gigantic losers." Pictures of the three candidates up for 2008 Cover of the Year, after the jump:   Here's hoping for the Spitzer cover from New York Magazine, but we would have voted for the Obama fist-bump cover from The New Yorker had it been offered.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre was only 17 in GGW video
She was just 17, so you know what that means. Specifically, it means Girls Gone Wild honcho Joe Francis may have to think twice before he starts peddling five-year-old footage of Ashley Alexandra Dupré, the now 22-year-old call girl who factored into the downfall of ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Francis' Mantra Films announced it had withdrawn a $1 million offer to Dupré to take part in the 2008 GGW spring-break tour, after it unearthed video of her shot in March 2003 in Miami. Dupré's law

Eliot Spitzer Hooker Earns $200,000 in Music Downloads
Eliot Spitzer's prostitute Ashley Alexandra Dupre is cashing in on the sex scandal. The budding singer, 22, may have already banked an estimated $200,000 from online music downloads, the New York Post reports. Dupre - who charged the disgraced New York Governor more than $4,000-a-month for her services - made two of her tunes, "What We Want" and "Move Ya Body," available for purchase as 99-cent downloads on music site Amie Street shortly after the scandal broke. (Musicians can earn a 70 percent cut on

#1 Hooker Talks About Client 9's Hooker
Natalie McLennan, the high-class escort once profiled in New York magazine as the "$2,000 an-Hour Woman," has a new book coming out about her escapades (The Price: My Rise and Fall As Natalia, New York's #1 Escort), and the Post has excerpts mentioning a notable figure: Ashley Dupre, also known as Kristen, the hooker that former Governor Eliot Spitzer had a fling with. McLennan and Dupre both worked for Jason "King of All Pimps" Itzler; McLennan recalled their work together, "Ashley and I were amazing toge

Well, When Your Use of Yahoo Mail is Widely Publicized...
After her decision to use personal e-mail accounts, instead of official Alaska state e-mail for state business (perhaps to circumvent subpoenas!), has been widely publicized, of course computer hackers would break into one of Governor Sarah Palin's Yahoo mail accounts with screenshots posted on WikiLeaks (also on Gawker). And of course the McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement, calling the matter a "shocking invasion of the governor's privacy and a violation of law." The FBI and Secret Service are curr

Eliot Spitzer wanted by Playgirl
Disgraced former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is wanted by Playgirl. The married politician apologized to his family and stepped down after it was revealed he was caught up with a prostitute ring. Now the male porn magazine has offered Spitzer the chance to get his kit off. The call girl at the center of the controversy, Ashley Dupre, has reportedly also been offered a string of $1m deals to strip off for magazines. “It’s not fair. We’ve been watching you; and we’ve seen how you’ve bee

Upcoming 'Law & Order' episode ripped from Eliot Spitzer headlines
Call it "Law & Order: Luv Gov." That's right, the crime show has started casting for an episode loosely based on Spitzer-gate, featuring a disgraced politician caught in a wild sex scandal. We originally heard the episode was set to run on the series arm "Special Victims Unit." Which means it would probably contain some dead hookers. But now a source close to the show says it will run on the original "Law & Order," probably before the end of this season. A rep for the show declined to comment, telling

A March cover of New York magazine locating Eliot Spitzer's brain below his waist has nabbed nominations in three different categories, including Cover of the Year, in the third annual best-covers contest organized by the American Society of Magazine Editors. This New York magazine cover was nominated in three different categories, including Cover of the Year, in ASME's best-covers contest. Elsewhere: Palin's Email, Silver's Warning, Blaming Spitzer
Sheldon Silver said of the Wall Street crisis, "It will affect our ability as a state to fund essential infrastructure projects, schools, and our higher education system.” He also expressed willingness to call the Assembly back to Albany. In "certain circles," according to Liz, Eliot Spitzer is being blamed for Wall Street's woes. Jim Wyne, who lost the Staten Island Republican Congressional primary with about 40 percent of the vote, is going to run as a write-in. Con Ed and anothe

Feds Have Spitzer Cornered
The noose appears to be tightening around sex-crazed ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer. The federal case against him is so strong that prosecutors had no interest in striking cooperation agreements with the ringleader of Spitzer's hooker-supplier, Emperors Club VIP, and his second in command, sources told The Post's Murray Weiss. Prosecutors have records of Spitzer's transactions, phone records and taped conversations with Emperors Club, and are confident they need little more to nail him on charges that could in

Okay So I’m a Little Obsessed with This Whole Thing About Sarah Palin’s Pregnant Teen Daughter
There are very few things that can get me genuinely interested in anything political. In fact, I had previously believed that there was nothing that could get me genuinely interested in anything political. This year, however, has proven me wrong. There are two things, at last count, that can get me genuinely interested in politics: hookers and teen pregnancies. Since the Eliot Spitzer scandal has died down, I am now thoroughly obsessed with Sarah Palin’s 16-year-old daughter, Bristol, and the child

DON'T MOCK ME!

Ashley Dupre's First Days As A Hooker [Books]
Natalie McLennan is the self-proclaimed high-end hooker whose statements in a 2005 New York magazine cover story helped get her convicted on prostitution-related charges last year. Now that she's done her time, McLennan is free to tell all in a new book. And, what do you know, just like her onetime pimp Jason Itzler, McLennan just happens to have unearthed from her memory some sexy new stories to tell about Ashley Dupre, famed hooker to former Gov. Eliot Spitzer and a former working girl alongside McLennan.

Former Governors Cuomo, Pataki and Spitzer Hope the NY Sun is Saved
The NY Sun, which announced its future was uncertain last week, has been racking up support from prominent people. Not only do Mario Cuomo and George Pataki sing the Sun's praises (Pataki says it's "the best paper in New York" while Cuomo said, "I like understanding from the op-eds and editorials the conservative view of things"), Eliot Spitzer gives his first public comments since his scandal: "The Sun has been a spectacular addition to the city's political discourse and is one of the finest papers in te

Paterson and the National (Fake) News Spotlight
Governor David Paterson is set to appear on the Colbert Report tomorrow, according to his official schedule. Paterson's predecessor Eliot Spitzer appeared on the show, and tried to out-funny the faux-conservative anchor, leading to a profoundly unamusing segment. In practical terms, it should be a chance for Paterson to grab some of the national exposure he sort of missed out on at the Democratic convention last week, at which a) Chuck Schumer forgot to introduce him at a breakfast in front of the New York

There's Love for the Sun; Spitzer Calls Paper 'Spectacular'
The New York Sun published a story today that quoted ex-politicians and a few semi-retired journalists saying that it would be a terrible thing if the newspaper closed later this month. In his first public interview since resigning, Eliot Spitzer says, "The Sun has been a spectacular addition to the city's political discourse and is one of the finest papers in terms of editing, writing, and analysis that one can find anywhere." (The Sun was one of the few outlets sympathetic towards Mr. Spitze

Ashley Alexandre Dupre out with another married man!
She sure gets around. Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer's hot-bodied hooker Ashley "Kristen" Dupre spent a day - and night - catting around Manhattan with the hunky, rich scion of a major New Jersey asphalt company who lives with a beautiful wife and their two kids fewer than two miles from Dupre's family home. The pretty woman, 23, and 35-year-old Thomas J. "TJ" Earle were spied ducking into the Gramercy Park Hotel, where they rented a room Tuesday after a long day drinking, dining, shopping and snuggling

Sheldon Silver and the State Senate Majority
The timing struck some people as unusual, since it gives Republicans an issue use against Democrats who are running for competitive State Senate seats, with only weeks to go before the election. (A poll earlier this week showed Democratic advantage in a number of those races.) The tax, which was repealed in 1999, is opposed by suburban and upstate Republican lawmakers whose constituents don't want to have to pay to work in the city. On his radio show this morning, host John Gambling asked Michael Bloomber

Ashley Dupre Shouts Out to 'Friends'
For the first time in months, Ashley Alexandra Dupre, the call-girl caught up in the scandal involving New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, shouts out to her MySpace 'friends' and publishes some of the comments that moved her.

Ashley Dupre's 'Girls Gone Wild' Video Debut
Porn peddler Joe Francis has been warned not to release videotapes of Eliot Spitzer call girl Ashley Dupre, because she is underage and exposes herself while dancing. But Francis claims he's consulted with laywers and will go forward with the release. He claims the tapes are legal because they show no overt sexual contact between Dupre and anyone else. She was reportedly 17 at the time of the shoot.

Bruno Says Obama's Like Spitzer: 'Glib, Articulate, Fancy, Dancey, Prancey'
MINNEAPOLIS—At a breakfast for the New York delegation to the R.N.C., Joe Bruno called Barack Obama a “wimp” and implied that, like Eliot Spitzer, there may be a side to him voters don't know yet. The attack by the former State Senate majority leader got a standing ovation. Bruno called Spitzer “glib, articulate, fancy, dancey, prancey, all of those kind of things,” and said it was those qualities that helped him earn 70 percent of the vote when he was elected governor in 2006. “Broke a recor

Paterson Says No Thompson Endorsement for 2009
During an African-American Day parade in Harlem yesterday, Paterson made several references to City Comptroller Bill Thompson possibly being the next mayor of the city (as he does in the clip above). After the parade, I asked Paterson what role he might play in the primary. “I think everybody knows Bill’s a good friend of mine. Our fathers served in the State Senate together. But I think Bill Thompson is perfectly capable of winning on his own. He doesn’t need me, and the other candidates have been
