We Search The Internet For Up-And-Coming Country Singers, Phat Jazz Musicians, And Other Musical Microstars [Next Little Things]
Each week, dozens of songs and albums from up-and-coming (or just plain unknown) bands debut on the world's music charts. Some of these bands will never be heard from again; some may become the next little thing. That's why we have Chuck Eddy exploring the world beyond the Billboard 200, where he'll look for diamonds in the MySpace rough. This week, his roster of up-and-comers includes a solo thrash revivalist, German Goths, "electronic body music," and a singer who's composed a prayer for a girl named Brit

Album: Mercury Rev, Snowflake Midnight (V2)
Only a few bands succeed in reinventing themselves even once, and it's hard to think of more than a select few – Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, The Beach Boys, The Grateful Dead – who pulled the trick off twice. OK, The Beatles. But with the gorgeous Snowflake Midnight, Mercury Rev have done just that, and re-connected with the exploratory impulses that drove their earliest works. In the beginning, the Rev were an avant-garde outfit on the cusp of art and chaos

MySpace Music relaunches, tries to turn up revenue volume
MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe came to a worrisome conclusion last year. The online community, which began as a place where musicians connected with fans, had stopped innovating. Proof of how its musical star had faded became clear during a conversation with Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine, who was the producer behind Stevie Nicks and Bruce Springsteen and with whom DeWolfe had previously struck a deal to distribute CDs on a MySpace Records label. Iovine didn't mince words. When it came to music

Ruth Vs. Maris, meet "Twist" Vs. "Smooth": All-Time Hot 100 Pits Old Against New [100 And Single]
Baseball is such a rich sport for data geeks, what with every move made by a player having a number attached to it. But the inconsistencies and outright mistakes in the sport's long history, from the number of games in a season to the exclusion of the Negro Leagues, make the sport even moregeek-friendly—those missteps become something else to debate, at least when fans aren't mulling the current statistical effects of controlled substances. Mistakes and inconsistencies are two of many things basebal

Chubby Checker, Rob Thomas: “The Twist” is the most popular song in Billboard history
As a part of their 50th Anniversary, Billboard has been compiling top ten lists ranging from most important artists on Billboard (the Beatles, natch) to the most popular songs ever in the history of the Hot 100. The song that tops the latter list? Chubby Checker’s “The Twist.”   It seems like an unlikely pick, but the song topped the charts for two separate three week periods in the early 60’s, when it was competing against singles from Elvis, and the single turnover was much hi

This Week’s DVD Releases: Ready For “The Promotion”?
Not exactly a bumper crop of DVDs this week, and the only one I’m really interested in is The Promotion. An indie comedy starring John C. Reilly and Seann William Scott as two grocery store junior managers competing for a coveted promotion, it got good reviews at SXSW but not much of a theatrical release. Now that it’s on DVD though, The Promotion is a good candidate for a rental. Give it a shot, you might be surprised. Also coming out this week is Then She Found Me, a Helen Hunt-directed drama

“Bumping into Geniuses” and then spilling their secrets.
What happens when a music manager writes a book about some of the most iconic names in music? You get “Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock and Roll Business” The book is pretty much an all-access pass to the world of rock and roll, with mesmerizing stories of thirty-five years spent working with legends from Led Zeppelin, to Stevie Nicks, to Nirvana. Director Larry Charles Says NC-17 Motley Crüe Film, The Dirt, Isn’t Happening. Also, New HBO Series with Kayne West.
The Motley Crüe biopic, The Dirt, is one of those long-fabled projects, complete with dream casting (Chris Walken as Ozzie!) befitting Inglorious Bastards circa 1999, that may never see the darkness of a theater. Borat and Religulous director, Larry Charles, has been attached to helm for some time and tells Coming Soon that his NC-17 vision is probably too nihilistic for Hollywood. The first sentence is a keeper… “…Motley Crüe is a crappy band but [Neil Strauss] wrote a really epic book
