The Russell Crowe Gimmick: A History
Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros. This needs to stop. In Body of Lies, Russell Crowe once again pulls out his oldest gimmick: The Contrarian Detail. Again and again, Crowe plays tough guys — and tries to humanize them with some too poetic, too cute detail, to ridiculous, distracting effect. His Black Bart cowboy had a taste for painting in 3:10 to Yuma (remember him sketching the sagebrush in between gunfights?). His fearless sea captain had a fine hand with the violin in Master and Commander (how&r

Review: ‘Body of Lies’ flat
Three years after his Crusades epic “Kingdom of Heaven,” director Ridley Scott returns to the shifting sands of the Middle East with “Body of Lies.” Unfortunately, despite the star power of Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, the movie lags.

‘Quarantine’ leads Friday box office
John Erick Dowdle’s “Quarantine” topped the North American box office Friday with an estimated $5.3 million in ticket sales. It was an easy win for the horror remake, which debuted at 2,461 locations this weekend.
Following in second place was last weekend’s champion “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” which took home another $4.5 million to reach a domestic total of $39.5 million after one week in release.
At No. 3, new entry “Body of Lies” collected $4.3 million. Directed by Ridley Scott, the f
An Arbitrary Guide To This Weekend’s New Releases October 10th, 2008
Another traffic jam at the multiplex this weekend… After last week’s 7 wide releases, this Friday sees 4 more jostling for a Top Ten spot. And that means a tough climb for any of last Friday’s releases that found themselves on the outside looking in last Monday. Factor in Columbus Day weekend and a day off on Monday, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua could easily stick around at #1 despite (or more likely, because of) the crowded marketplace.
Body of Lies should provide Chihuahua’s main challenge, with L

Review Roundup: BODY OF LIES, EXPRESS, QUARANTINE
This week, the studios have once again carefully programmed and counter-programmed with a movie for just about every taste: To start, a Ridley Scott thriller with major stars, a sports biopic and a freaky horror remake.
We had planned to round up more movies from last week’s avalanche, but nah. What’d we miss, An American Carol? Please. Let’s move on for this week.

Weekend Movie Forecast: Body of Lies, City of Ember
Ridley Scott's Body of Lies stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a high strung CIA operative and Russell Crowe as his duplicitous supervisor who spends his days scheming covert ops from the ironically banal environs of his suburban home. A.O. Scott at the Times wonders: "If terrorism has become boring, does that mean the terrorists have won? Or, conversely, is the grinding tedium of this film good news for our side, evidence of the awesome might of Western popular culture, which can turn even the most intransigent an
Dr. Venkman Reviews: Body of Lies
Body of Lies was a great movie for that type of international terrorist action drama genre. If you like those kinds of films then ‘Body of Lies’ is your wet dream. For the most part I like these kinds of movies and I was really looking forward to seeing this film. I find these kinds of films interesting to watch but at the same time it isn’t a fun watch. You are forced to think in these types of movies so if your not into thinking while watching a film Body of Lies may not be for you.

Review: Body of Lies
I found myself asking one simple question during Ridley Scott's Body of Lies, a well-shot, big-name intelligence thriller that sees Leonardo DiCaprio's CIA man caught up in action in the Middle East -- namely, what is Body of Lies for? I don't mean that in the sense of asking what it supports or believes in -- although, with the film's mix of Hollywood heroics and sneering cynicism, you're certainly left with that question -- but rather in the sense of asking what it is that Body of Lies means to accomplish

Another four movies open wide on Friday — Warner Bros.’ Leonardo DiCaprio-Russell Crowe CIA actioner “Body of Lies,” directed by Ridley Scott; Universal sports biopic “The Express”; Sony/Screen Gems’ horror title “Quarantine”; and Fox-Walden family film “City of Ember.”

Guns N’ Roses To Return Nov. 23, But Only At Best Buy
Over fifteen years after the release of Guns N’ Roses‘ last studio album, The Spaghetti Incident?, a very-kinda-plausible-maybe-we’ll-see release date has been announced, according to Billboard. On November 23rd, the decade-plus-in-the-making Chinese Democracy, will be released exclusively to Best Buy. And what could be more rock and roll than that.
